Pioneer Ancestors
The Acadians were French settlers of eastern Canada exiled from their
land in the 1750s. The Cajuns are their descendants who settled in Louisiana.
Today, thousands of Acadian-Cajun descendants cherish their rich legacy
of history and genealogy.
Although the term "Cajun" is an English corruption of Acadian,
the two words are by no means synonymous. Carl A. Brasseaux from the Center
for Cultural and Eco-Tourism of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette
tells us the history of the Cajuns. Includes a brief overview of Cajun
music and Zydeco, by Barry Jean Ancelet.
The history of the French community in Los Angeles from 1779 to 1911 by
the Consulate General of France in Los Angeles. The home of French pioneeres
like Bauchet, Beaudry, Bernard, Ducommun, Leonis, Mignonette, Mesnager,
Nadeau, Naud, Prudent and Vignes. The text is based on the "Guide
Français de Los Angeles et du Sud de la Californie", published
in 1932 by F. Loyer and C. Beaudreau.
The influence and history of the French in South Dakota: "French
Settlers" by Dr. Nancy McCahren, 1988
The Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH)
of the University of Montréal undertook in 1966 the exhaustive
reconstraction of the population of Quebec from the beginnings of French
colonization in the 17th century. This objective has been realized in
the form of a computerized population register, composed of biographical
files on all individuals of European ancestry who lived in the St. Lawrence
Valley. The file for each individual gives the date and place of birth,
marriage and death, as well as ability to sign his or her name, place
of residence and the immigrants place of origin. The database includes
the sections "Repertory of vital events" from 1621-1799, a "Genealogical
dictionnary of families" from 1621-1765 and a "Repertory of
couples and filial relations" from 1621-1799, Including the history
of the Pioneers.
Huguenot Ancestors
The Huguenot Society of Great Britain &
Ireland was founded in 1885 by directors of the French Hospital and promotes
the history and genealogy of the Hugenots in Great Britain and Ireland.
The publications of the society includes, among many others, CD-Roms of
the registers of the French Churches of Threadneedle Street and La Patente
in London, Saint Jean in Spitalfields, Walloon and Huguenot churches outside
London and of Ireland, as well as Acts of Naturalization in England and
Ireland from 1509 - 1800.
The objectives of The National Huguenot Society are patriotic,
religious, historical and educational. Their design is to perpetuate the
memory and spirit of the men and women in France known as Huguenots who
were persecuted in the 16th and 17th centuries because of their adherence
to the basic tenets of the Protestant faith and their devotion to liberty,
and who emigrated either directly or through other countries to North
America and contributed by their character and ability to the development
of the United States. The site includes a Huguenot ancestral name listing
and many links for Huguenot genealogical and historical research.
