Before the revolution of 1789 the kingdom of France counts 33 provinces.
The earldom of Poitou includes
the Haut-Poitou (county town Poitiers) and the Bas-Poitou (county
town Fontenay-le-Comte). In 1790 France is divided in administrative
divisions. Poitou comprises three Departements: Deux-Sèvres,
Vendée and Vienne,
and parts of it are integrated in the Departements Charente,
Charente-Inférieure
(today Maritime),
Haute-Vienne and Maine-et-Loire. |

duchy of Guyenne (county
town Bordeaux) includes Bazadais (county town Bazas), Périgord
(county town Périgueux), Agenois (county town Agen), Quercy
(county town Cahors), Rouergue (county town Rodez) and Condomois (county
town Condom). These provinces form the Departements of Gironde,
Dordogne,
Lot-et-Garonne, Lot, Aveyron, Tarn-et-Garonne and Landes. Poitou
and Guyennne belonged to the duchy of Aquitaine. |
Marriages are celebrated from 1 vendémiaire
an VII (22.9.1798) to 7 thermidor an VIII (26.7.1800) in the county town.
The administrative divisions of the Departements
are those of the 19th century, based on the census of 1876.
